MAXITORQ® Multiple Disc Electric Clutches and Brakes deliver 3 to 6 times the torque of single disc electric clutches of the same package size. They provide superior performance and reliability for critical applications. The MAXITORQ® multiple disc electric clutch design is simple and rugged. The coil housing, supported on dual ball bearings, is held stationary and is held from rotating with an anti-rotation fitting. Unlike most other clutches and brakes, the MAXITORQ® magnetic flux design does not place any clamping force on the bearings. The result is a longer bearing life due to minimal loading forces.
The "through-the-disc" magnetic flux path provides maximum torque transfer, automatic wear compensation, and consistent performance throughout the life of the clutch. These clutches and brakes can run dry or in oil, for additional heat dissipation and extended disc life.
Carlyle Johnson electric clutches and brakes provide high reliability for critical military applications, as in the U.S. Armys new fighting vehicles, winch mechanisms aboard rescue helicopters, cooling pump drives, bomb hoists, and aircraft deicing equipment.

MAXITORQ® Fail-Safe clutches and brakes offer a solution to the need for a reliable, spring applied, positive acting clutch to quickly start a wide range of equipment. Precision designed and manufactured, these units have been thoroughly tested to deliver proven, dependable performance in many diverse applications from heavy-duty machine tools to fragile assembly and packaging equipment.
Electrically operated, the coil is sealed within a stationary housing which is supported on ball bearings. A powerful electromagnetic force disengages the disc pack unit to provide a low-drag neutral. The internal compressive forces are contained within the clutch and are not transmitted through the bearings. The radial magnetic flux path provides maximum torque throughout the life of the unit. These clutches and brakes provide long service life and can be rebuilt without requiring any special tools.
MAXITORQ® Spring Applied clutches or brakes feature an adjustable end plate design. In a typical brake installation the clutch is keyed to a shaft and engages with a stationary cup which is secured to a machined frame or other grounded device. The coil is energized and disengages the armature plate separating the multiple friction discs for release. Actuation of the brake is by means of a limit switch, overload sensor, or similar electric apparatus wired in series with the coil winding. When trouble occurs, the sensing device interrupts the electrical circuit, de-energizing the coil, allowing the coil springs to compress the multiple friction discs thereby braking the machine to a stop (as a brake) or, by coupling the driving and driven devices (as a clutch).

The standard line of spring applied, multiple disc, electric brakes is designed for use as holding brakes, medium duty starting and stopping brakes, and for emergency stopping. Braking torque is applied when the electrical power is removed from the brake coil. This can occur intentionally or when there is a power failure. Removing power from the brake coil releases the compression springs, which clamp the MAXITORQ® multiple friction discs between the brake armature and the stationary end plate resulting in a constant holding force. This provides braking torque to the hub and shaft through the friction discs. To release the brake, power is applied to the coil, producing a magnetic field that pulls the armature against the coil springs and away from the friction discs. Braking torque is now removed and the brake is free to rotate. The multiple discs are uniformly spaced by a unique MAXITORQ® separator spring design, which ensures separation of the rotating friction discs when disengaged, regardless of the orientation of the brake. This virtually eliminates parasitic drag, which is detrimental to brake life. Our optimal flux path design minimizes flux leakage between the armature and the friction discs.
Typical applications include medical diagnostic equipment, parts handling equipment, holding brakes in servo drives and robotic mechanisms, emergency stopping brakes on power generation equipment and parking brakes on mobile and military equipment. We offer custom brakes with torque capabilities up to 3200 lb. ft. A significant portion of Carlyle Johnsons production is directed to user-specific requirements, including application of FEB brakes for frequent, high energy stops, extremely fast or slow braking and extremely low power consumption.
Carlyle Johnson offers a standard line of DC power supplies. Special power supplies are also available to reduce current draw and increase or decrease brake engagement or disengagement times. Contact your Carlyle Johnson engineering representative for further information.

Multiple Disc Spring Set Brakes (EFS)
- Advanced design provides unusually high torque for their compact size
- Fast, reliable, positive braking action with free-floating, drag-free neutral
- Actuation induced entirely by magnetic flux - 100VDC or 24VDC operation, other voltages are available
- Optional C-faced non-magnetic flanges permit direct mounting on C-framed motors
- Easily interfaced with N/C and automated machines
- Furnished ready for quick, simple installation - no drive cups required
MAXITORQ® Multiple Disc Spring Set Brakes are particularly suited for applications demanding fast, positive braking to stop machines. They are designed and built to provide unusually high torque for their compact size and meet braking requirements of a wide range of machinery.
Since they are electrically controlled, actuation is induced entirely by magnetic flux generated by an electro-magnetic coil sealed within the non-rotating housing. Both styles are easily interfaced with N/C and automated machines. Depending on brake design, proven MAXITORQ® multiple disc units provide quick, positive braking and a floating, drag-free neutral.
This Fail-Safe brake provides static torque from 3 lb. ft. - 1,000 lb. ft. The design incorporates a MAXITORQ® multiple disc unit which is kept compressed by radially spaced coil springs between the armature and end plate resulting in a constant "holding" force as long as the coil is not energized. When energized, the electro-magnetic force flows through the flux path to override the spring pressure, releasing the friction discs for drag-free shaft rotation. Fail-Safe brakes can also function as a torque limiting device. Output torque can be adjusted over the operating range of the respective unit. Adjustment for wear is easily accomplished keeping maintenance costs at a minimum.
Furnished ready for use, installation is quickly made by sliding the brake over the keyed shaft and bolting it to a frame member. Optional C-faced non-magnetic flanges are available enabling direct mounting on C-frame motors. Standard coil voltages are 24VDC and 100VDC. Special coils and AC to DC power supplies are available.

Single Disc Spring Set Brakes (SAB)
- Power-off design (electrically released)
- Low inertia
- Minimum zero backlash
- Factory set air-gap needs no adjustment
- Long life friction material
- Excellent torque-to-size ratio
- Excellent repeatability
- Torque range 10 oz. in. - 250 lb. in.
The MAXITORQ® Single Disc Electric Spring Set Brakes are designed for use as holding brakes or for infrequent emergency stops. Braking torque is applied when electrical power is removed from the brake coil. This can occur intentionally or when there is a power failure.
Power removal releases the armature, allowing springs to clamp a friction disc between the brake armature and the end cap, providing braking torque to the shaft where the friction disc is connected. To release the brake, power is applied to the coil. This produces a magnetic field which pulls the armature away from the friction disc and removes the braking torque.
A protective sleeve prevents wear particles from falling into the brake. The spring set single disc brakes are also available in zero backlash models or with special friction materials. Carlyle Johnson also offers engineering support to design unique products for special applications. Standard models offer a range of holding torques from 10oz. in. - 250 lb. in.
Single Disc Clutches or Brakes
- Electrically energized design
- Low inertia
- Minimum Backlash
- Factory set air gaps
- Excellent torque to size ratio
- Excellent repeatability
- Torque Range 10 lb. in. - 800 lb. in.
The MAXITORQ® Single disc electric clutches and brakes engage when the coil is energized. Specifically designed for applications requiring lower braking torques. Several types of armatures are available. The spindled-hub drive provides automatic wear follow-up. The flat spring drive provides zero backlash and quiet operation. Segmented armatures are available to provide greater heat dissipation. Armature hubs with built-in sleeve bearings simplify their use in clutching applications.
