Dalton Bearing Service supplies Fafnir ball bearings and Fafnir ball bearing housed units, a brand that now belongs to Timken. Fafnir is the name Timken uses for much of its ball bearing range: radial ball bearings, wide inner ring ball bearings, angular contact ball bearings and super precision ball bearings. In housed units, the Fafnir line covers pillow blocks, flange bearings, take-up units and other mounted bearings that come with the bearing, housing, seal and locking collar in one assembly.
Fafnir also makes special lines that turn up in our customers' plants: ceramic hybrid bearings for high speed, farm and agricultural disc bearings, and corrosion resistant bearings for washdown areas. Fafnir bearings are used in textile and carpet mills, food and beverage plants, paper and steel mills, farm equipment and automotive work. Many Dalton-area mills still run machines specified with Fafnir part numbers decades ago.
Because Fafnir is part of Timken, Fafnir and Timken part numbers often sit side by side in the same catalog and ship from the same supply chain. If you have an older Fafnir or Torrington-era number, we can match it to the current Timken or Fafnir equivalent. Fafnir ownership & history
Fafnir Bearing Company was founded in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1911 and grew into one of the major American ball bearing makers. Textron bought it in 1968. In 1985 Textron sold the Fafnir Bearing division to Ingersoll-Rand, which merged it into its Torrington Company. That made Torrington, already strong in needle and roller bearings, a full-line bearing maker.
Fafnir stayed with Torrington inside Ingersoll-Rand until February 2003, when Timken bought the Torrington business, Fafnir brand included, for about $840 million. Timken kept the Fafnir name for ball bearings and housed units, and it still sells them under that name today.
